PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Wow! It’s already time for our September meeting. Where did the time go?
Our September meeting will be focusing on our members, both seasoned and new. It will be a time to
orient our new members into who the Woman’s Club of Olympia is, what we do and how every
member can contribute. It will also be a time to reinvigorate our seasoned members and hopefully
causing them to want to participate more in our programs and events. Without membership participation, it is really hard to create programs, events, and opportunities for making our community a better place to live.
You are challenged to invite and bring an interested person who may want to check out our club. This is a
great opportunity for them to see who we are. If you invite and bring someone, your name will be entered into a drawing for a great basket of goodies.
I look forward to meeting everyone you invite!
Sandra Groves, President

VOLUNTEER
CORNER

DO YOU READ?
If you like to read, whether books or digital books, you are invited to
join the ESO Book Club at The Woman’s Club of Olympia. We
meet the 4th Monday of the month at 1:30 p.m. and we discuss the
books we are currently reading, have finished, and get ideas for
books to read in the future. We always have refreshments and fun. If you are looking for
a social time with other club members, consider joining us. You won’t be disappointed.

RECYCLING UPDATES – Anna McKinney

PLASTIC: We are still collecting the plastic (however, everyone will need to inform Anna if you drop off
plastic at the house and where you put it when you left it).

MEDICINE BOTTLES: Recycling of the medicine bottles will start up again in September and continue
until June. Bring your bottles without labels to the meeting.

POP TABS and BREAD TAGS: Pop tabs and plastic bread tags will be collected year round at our
regular meetings.

EYE GLASSES: If you have old or unwanted eyeglasses, please bring them to meetings and they will be
given to the Lions Club as part of their eyeglass collection project.

REPORTING HOURS
Don’t forget to record your volunteer hours using the form at the end of this newsletter. If
you do not want to use the form, then please just send your hours to Mary Siddell via
email. She will compile all our efforts for reporting at the end of the year.

BYLAWS UPDATED AND READY FOR APPROVAL
Our Bylaws are out of date and still have the old community service programs listed. The Board has
approved recommending that the new “Amended Bylaws” be presented to the membership for final
approval. The Bylaws need to be presented 3 times before they can be adopted. Members will receive
the amended version along with the older version via email to read. We will have time at the next few
meetings for questions or comments or if you have any additional changes you would like to see.

SUMMER RETREAT A SUCCESS
The Retreat held in July was a success and a lot of ground covered.
Those in attendance provided ideas to make our meetings better for
everyone and we all filled out a “bucket list” of what we want to see
accomplished in the future. Those ideas were so good and welcome and
we will endeavor to implement them as we chart our course forward.
Thank you so much to everyone who attended!!!

AUDIT AND BUDGET COMMITTEE
The Audit committee met and signed off on the 2024 audit of our books. Yay!!!
The Budget committee also met and prepared a draft budget
which was presented at the August Board meeting. The Board
approved the Budget to be presented to the membership at the
September meeting for adoption. The Budget always has to take
into account rental incomes for the house account and operation
of the Abigail Stuart House. The Club is generally self-sufficient
but the House account may need to be revisited depending on rentals.

2024 NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE
Saturday, September 28, 2024 is the GFWC (General Federation of Women’s
Clubs) National Day of Service spotlighting food insecurity and hunger in the United
States. According to the US Department of Agriculture, 34 million people in the US
are food insecure, 9 million children are hungry, 53 million people turned to food
banks following COVID 19 due to unemployment and 100% of US counties have
families suffering from food insecurity. This year The Woman’s Club of Olympia is
participating by helping All Kids Win. More information for this event will be provided
as the date draws nearer, but be sure to put the date on your calendars!

HERITAGE DAY EVENT
The Thurston County Historic Commission is holding a Heritage Day Event on October 26, 2024 at the Thurston County Fairgrounds Heritage Hall. At previous Heritage Day events, groups have set up tables to display information about their achievements made possible in part by the Heritage Grant Program which is awarded yearly to applicants to support historical preservation projects. This year, The Woman’s Club of Olympia is applying for a grant from this organization, so put this date on your calendar to attend and
support the Commission.
The Woman’s Club of Olympia is in the process of applying for several grants in the hopes of securing funding for needed projects. If you have ideas or places to apply, please contact Sandra Groves.
